BADEN-WUERTTEMBERG
Baden-Württemberg is a region in the Southwest part of Germany with 10,7
million inhabitants. It is in a central location with excellent transport and
business links to the rest of the continent. The four administrative districts
are Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Freiburg and Tübingen. The biggest cities are
Stuttgart, with just under 600,000 inhabitants, Mannheim with 295,000, Karlsruhe
with 270,000 and Freiburg with 197,000.
There are five major clusters in the region - mobility, healthcare,
environmental technology, TIME (Telecoms, IT, Media, Electronics) and industrial
process technology.
More than 30% of German institutes for applied research are located in the
State and a number of them specialize in the main cluster areas, such as the
Hahn-Schickard Society for Micro-Technology and IT (IMIT) and the Karlsruhe
research center, which, with a staff of 3,800 is one of the largest research
centers in the world.
The State also supports a number of industry programs. These state sponsored
programs are particularly relevant in the biotechnology sector, where 4 regions
within Baden-Württemberg have been designated as areas which focus specifically
on biotechnology and genetic engineering. Across these areas, there are more
than 78 biotechnology companies; more than in any other German State.
Companies that have been attracted to Baden-Württemberg include
DaimlerChrysler, IBM, Siemens, Trumpf and Würth. The worldwide headquarters of
the software company, SAP is also located in the region. Baden-Württemberg also
benefits from a powerful backbone of small and medium-sized enterprises. In
addition, Baden-Württemberg provides an outstanding quality of life. Its
picturesque landscape, outstanding environmental values and international arts
and culture scene make you feel at home.
The British Chamber of Commerce
in Germany is a powerful international Business Network. We invite you to join
us and benefit from our extensive member network.
