BREMEN/LOWER-SAXONY
The two-city state of Bremen and Bremerhaven is one of the largest industrial sites in Germany and is best characterized by its outstanding research and high-tech landscape. The city enjoys a broad and diverse economy, with its major industry sectors in the maritime economy, logistics, wind energy, automotive, aerospace, and the food & beverage industries. Thanks to its fast, direct connections by road, rail and sea to all European markets, Bremen is a leading European logistics centre. Its port Bremerhaven is one of the four largest ports in Europe.
Bremen is also at the forefront in digital technologies: Bremen-based researchers are making decisive contributions to scientific progress in the areas of artificial intelligence and robotics, while numerous IT companies ensure that this know-how is transferred from science into practice. Multiple Universities provide skilled workforce for the technology companies based in the region, as well as the about 50 scientific institutes, which contribute to the global R&D activities of Bremen.
Lower Saxony is the
second largest state in terms of area. It borders the Netherlands to the west
and seven other states and the City of Hamburg to the east. Hannover is the
state capital. International airports are located at Hannover, Bremen and
Hamburg, providing access to the continent and worldwide destinations. The
economy in Lower Saxony is going through dramatic change as it moves from a
still strong industrial base with Volkswagen being the industrial flagship, to a
service sector economy. Within the service sector, particular growth has come
from credit institutions, insurance companies, legal and management consultancy
and tourism and culture operators. The region is home to TUI, Germany's largest
tour operator and Norddeutsche Landesbank, the third largest credit institution in northern Germany.
